OVID WWW
Quick Guide
World Wide Web (WWW) access
requires the use of a mouse to select items from the screen. This method
of access also requires an internet connection which allows use of a WWW
browser (e.g. Netscape or Internet Explorer).
Before Starting
If you are searching at a Library workstation, go to
To Get Started at Library Workstations
instructions.
If you are searching at a workstation outside the Library, remote access
instructions are available in the Library and on the WWW:
http://www.medlib.iupui.edu/ref/medlaccess.html. Once you
are connected to the Library's server, continue with the section labeled
Databases.
To Get Started At Library Workstations
(If a menu window with a Netscape icon is not visible, press
Enter. If this does not work, try exiting from any open windows.)
Double-click on the Netscape icon.
Click on Open.
In the Location box, enter the following address: http://www.medlib.iupui.edu/medweb,
then click on Open.
Click in the box labeled User ID. Your User ID is your 14 digit
Indiana University Library Card Number, or your 9 digit Indiana University
Identification Number (which may be the same as your Social
Security Number. Enter your User ID number in the box, then click on
Start OVID.
Databases
Click on the desired database or, for more information about a database,
click on the i symbol to the left of the database name.
Searching
Searching by Subject Heading
Click in the box labeled Enter Keyword or Phrase and enter the term
to be searched.Then click on Perform Search
If a suitable term appears on the next screen, click on the underlined
term.. This will show you how your term is related to similar
terms. If only one term is of interest, click in the Select box to
the left of the term. If more than one term is of interest, click in the
box to the left of the term highest on the list that is applicable, then
click in the Explode box to the right of that term. If you wish to
retrieve only articles where the term is one of the main points being
discussed, also click in the Focus box to the right of the term.
Click on Continue.
Subheadings
Subheadings let you look at specific aspects of your topic. You may
choose to Include All Subheadings by clicking in the box to the
left of that phrase, or you may select one or more subheadings by clicking
in the box to the left of each desired subheading. Click on Perform
Search.
OR
If no suitable term appears on the next screen, change to a Keyword
search by clicking in the box labeled Search as Keyword, then
click on Perform Search.
Searching by Keyword
Click in the box to the left of the phrase Map Term to Subject
Heading to remove the X from the box.
Type the word or phrase to be searched in the Keyword box, then
click on Perform Search.
Author Searching
Click on Author.
Type the author's last name, followed by a space (no comma), and first
initial (if known), then click on Perform Search.
Mark the name(s) to be searched by clicking in the box(es) appearing to
the left of each desired name, then click on Continue.
Other Types of Searching
Other kinds of searching may be done by adding the appropriate field code,
with a period on each side of the code, to the end of the search statement
(e.g. indiana university.in. to search the institutional field for
articles written at Indiana University). A list of codes is on the WWW: http://www.medlib.iupui.edu/ref/ovidfields.html.

Combining Sets
Once at least two sets have been created, click on Combine to
decrease or increase your retrieval.
Click in the box next to each set to be combined.
Select AND or OR by clicking on the AND box and choosing
one. Select AND to narrow your search (ALL of the search terms must be
present in each article; use OR to broaden your search (AT LEAST ONE of
the search terms must be present in each article). Click on Combine
Searches.
Limiting a Set
Some limits may be applied before starting a search. After filling
in a word or phrase to be searched, select the limit(s) to be applied by
clicking in the appropriate box(es) below the box labeled Enter Keyword
or phrase. When finished choosing limits, click on Perform
Search.
Additional limits are avaialable after performing a search. To
limit an exiting set, click on Limit.
If more than one set exists, choose the set to limit by clicking in the
Select circle next to the desired set. Select the limits to be
applied by clicking in the appropriate box(es) and/or clicking on
items in the scrollable lists at the bottom of the screen (multiple
limits can be chosen in these lists by holding down the Shift,
Control (ctrl) or 'Apple' key, depending on the type of
workstation being used). Click on Limit Search when finished
choosing limits.
Displaying a Set
Scroll down the screen to see the first
ten references, or click on the word Display to the right
of the set to be viewed.
To view records in a longer format, click on Complete Record or
Abstract. To return to the list of titles, click on Titles
Display. To change the fields displayed, go to the bottom of of the
screen and select display configuration in the Fields box of the
Citation Manager. To go to the next record, click on Next
Citation(s). To return to the previous record, click on Previous
Citation(s). Save records for emailing or downloading by
clicking in the box appearing with each record to be saved. Click in the
box again to deselect a record.
If Full Text appears at the end of a reference, click on it to view
the complete article. Use the scroll bar to navigate in full text.
Use the mouse to click on links to references or to click on graphics to
display them in a larger size. (Your WWW browser may require a separate
viewer application to display graphics. Details on obtatining the
necessary software are available in the Library or on the WWW:
http://www.medlib.iupui.edu/graphics.html.)
When finished viewing the full text, click on Titles Display to
return to the original record display.

Changing Databases
Click on Change Database.
Click on the name of the new database. Click on Yes to repeat
the same search in the new database or No to start a new search
NO RESULTS? Not all databases use the same terminology, try related
terms.
Exiting OVID
When finished searching, return to Main Search Screen and click on
Logoff. You will be returned to the opening OVID WWW screen, from
which you may exit your browser.
