OVID Electronic Full-text Journals
About the OVID Electronic Journal Collections
Produced by OVID Technologies, the two Biomedical Collections and the
Nursing Journal Collection are computerized databases which contain the
complete articles, including graphical images, from 82 journals. The
databases cover the time period 1993 to the present or 1995 to the
present, and are updated monthly on the Library's network. The list of available titles can be found near the end of
this document.
Searching the OVID Electronic
Journals
There are several interfaces available for searching the
OVID electronic journals; Telnet (text only, no graphics), Windows and
World Wide Web (WWW). This guide provides an overview of the electronic
journal database. Commands may differ between interfaces. Use this guide
with the Windows, WWW, or Telnet Quick Guide
for instructions specific to the method you are using.
NOTE: Special software may be required to view the graphical
images. Information on obtaining the necessary software is available in
the Library and on the WWW:
http://www.medlib.iupui.edu/graphics.html. Searching
Commands
The most commonly used search commands in the Core
Biomedical Journals collection are keyword, author and journal (to see a
list of articles in a specific journal).
Keyword Searching
This allows you to search
for a word or phrase in article titles, abstracts (short summaries of
article contents), full text, and captions of graphics.
Type a
word or phrase to be searched , then press Enter. The results of
your search will be listed on the main search screen as a numbered set.
Additional textwords may be searched in the same way.
Author Searching
This allows you to search for an author by last name and initials or, in
some cases full first names and middle initial.
Type the author's last name followed by a space and the first initial, if
known. You will see an alphabetic listing of author names. Select the desired
name(s). When finished selecting, follow the on-screen instructions. Your
selection(s) will be listed on the main screen. If you choose more than
one name, each name will be listed separately, then all the choices will
be combined in one set. Search additional author names in the same way.
Journal Searching
To browse article titles
in a specific journal, use the Journal command. Type the name of
the journal to be searched (e.g. Nature), and select it from the
presented list. Use the View command to see a chronological
listing (newest first) of article titles in that journal. Use the
Link or Full Text command to see the complete article. To
limit the display to the Table of Contents for a single issue, use the
Contents or Table of Contents command for any article in the
desired issue.
Other Types of Searching
Other kinds of searching may be done by
using the Search or Search Fields menu. Select the
individual field(s) to be searched, then enter the search term(s).
Additional searching hints are available in the Library and on the WWW:
http://www.medlib.iupui.edu/ref/ovidtips.html.
Limiting a Search
The Limit command allows you to restrict a set in various ways, such
as human subjects or specific publication types (e.g. review articles).
Combining Sets
Once at least two sets have been created, use the Combine command
to decrease or increase your retrieval. Select AND to narrow
your search (all search terms must be included in each article);
use OR to expand your search (at least one of the search terms
will appear in each article).
Displaying a Set
Select the View command in Windows and telnet, or simply scroll
down the screen in the World Wide Web version, to see the items retrieved
by your search.
Select the set to be viewed. This will show you the references and abstracts
(if available) only. To view the full text of a reference, select Link.
Use the Print or Save command after using the
Link command for EACH full text article, otherwise only the reference to
the article will be captured. NOTE: In order to print or download
GRAPHICS from an article in the Web version, each individual graphic MUST
be displayed on the screen.
To view records in a shorter format (author, title, source), select
Titles. To return to the longer format, choose Documents.
You may also view the entire table of contents for the journal issue
containing
a displayed record by choosing Contents.
Selecting a reference to an article or a graphical image from within
the full text lets you view that reference or image.
Within a reference, you may link back to the text where the reference was
listed, or to the Medline record for the reference (not currently available
in WWW interface).
The Next and Previous (or Prev) command let you advance
to the next record or return to the previous record.
If you want to save references to full text articles for printing
or downloading, either press the spacebar for each item (Windows and telnet)
or click in the box appearing with each desired item (WWW). When finished
viewing the set, select Close to return to the main search screen.
Your selected records will appear as a numbered set.
Printing/Downloading
See the separate Printing/Downloading guide (Telnet, Windows, WWW) for instructions.
NOTE: Graphical images (only available in Windows and WWW) and
full text in the Web version must be printed and downloaded as separate
files. Web graphics are NOT automatically included when using the Print or
Save commands. The Windows version offers of choice of printing with or
without graphics. See Displaying a Set for
more information.
Changing Databases
This allows your to change to other databases:
Medline , CancerLit, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health
Literature) or HealthSTAR (Health Services, Technology, Administration and
Research). See the Windows, WWW or Telnet Quick Guide for
instructions on changing databases.
If you repeat the same search in another database and get no results, be
aware that the other OVID databases use specific subject headings for
comprehensive searching.
When searching Medline or CINAHL, if the phrase [Use LINK to View
the Full Text] (Windows and telnet) or **Full text** (WWW)
appears at the top or bottom of a reference, choose Link (Windows
and telnet) or click on message (WWW) and follow all other CBC
instructions to navigate, view, print or download.
Ending
Your Search Session
Please exit (Windows and telnet) or
logoff (WWW) from the OVID databases when finished searching.
