Who Can Use the Library?

Users whose activities fulfill the School of Medicine's missions of education, research, and clinical care are welcome to visit the library.  Users not engaged in such activities and whose behavior interferes with others' academic pursuits, will be asked to leave.

Borrowing Materials

Computer Use

Users of Medical Library in-house computers and networks are expected to follow University policies.  Guest library users who do not have an IUPUI or IU computer account are required to show a picture i.d. and sign in at the Information Services (Circulation) main desk before receiving a guest computer account.  Restrictions apply to guest computer accounts, call 317-274-7182 for more information.

Adjunct and Volunteer Faculty

  • To access Medical Library resources, adjunct and volunteer faculty need to establish a formal affiliate appointment before they can receive their IUSM ID and password. The IUSM ID and password allow the user to access library resources on- or off-campus.
  • The applicant's Department Chair or Center Director can request this appointment by following this procedure:
  • Go to Account Management Service
  • Click on Manage My IU Accounting Accounts
  • After authenticating, on the next page click on Request to Add IU Affiliate
  • Medical Library faculty and staff cannot provide passwords or sponsor affiliates

Retirees

At Indiana University, retired faculty and staff can have a computing account, which allows access to library resources.  To receive this computing account, you must be retired according to IU's criteria.  For a list of the age and service requirements necessary to qualify as an official retiree, see Retiree Status and Benefits.

Alumni

Currently, alumni are not authorized for an IU computing account, unless also affiliated with Indiana University as student, staff, faculty, retiree or affiliate appointment.
